And now for the Samuel updates...
Samuel is now 17 weeks old... 4 months old tomorrow by date. We will go tomorrow for his 4-month well-baby visit. More vaccinations await my baby at the pediatric clinic. I really am praying that he does as well or better than he did two months ago. We will see!
Samuel is a very happy and peaceful baby. He is not fussy unless he has some gas on his tummy. He is still a good eater and sleeper for the most part. He has not slept through the night in several weeks (since the first time I reported that he did); but he is usually down six hours. We truly look forward to the weekends because he is sleepy when we all get home. We usually have to work to keep him awake for a while after his 6:00 feeding.
He is holding his head up very well and can pull his shoulders up when he's laying on his tummy. He really enjoys sitting up, but spends most of his upright time trying to stand up. He is very strong and can use his legs to completely raise himself up. If he could balance himself, he would be standing on his own! He has discovered how to raise his legs while he's lying on his back so that he can grab his toes. He hasn't quite gotten his toes up to his mouth yet, but I don't think it will be long. He rolls from his tummy to his back but hasn't figured how to get from his back to his tummy. He easily rolls from side to side.
Samuel loves anything colorful and often tries to reach out and grab some object that dangles in front of him. He grasps some things, but hasn't accomplished holding onto anything for long periods of time yet. I think the thing he likes most is Tadbit... a little security blanket with a turtle on the front. He can play with the head and arms. Samuel likes to look at Tadbit and then put Tadbit's head in his mouth. You can see a picture with Tadbit in one of today's earlier posts.
Have I mentioned yet that my son is a drool monster? We think teeth may be on the way.
Also, his hair is worth mentioning. You may see on some of the photos/video that the hair on the top of his head sticks up. We can't make it lay down flat. But even funnier, is that he has some Alfalfa hair. It's hard to capture on film, but he has 3 or 4 hairs that are really long - there from birth.
Tomorrow, I will talk to the doctor about starting Samuel on solid food. Not really baby food, but perhaps some cereal with his milk. I think he is ready for something more substantial. I think it will help him sleep better and perhaps be more content between feedings. I am also going to ask about formula suggestions. I am still breastfeeding and happily doing so, but our schedule is about to get more hectic and I think I need a backup. I also think having a formula option will make me feel better. I currently only pump enough for the next day and that can be stressful. If I don't get enough, I end up trying to pump in the middle of the night... worrying if Samuel will wake up in the next few minutes... wake up his Daddy... then I'll be out of milk since I just pumped... What a dilemna, huh?
I suppose that's it for now.

Raspberry Heaven
And final video for the day... here is Samuel showing his mastery of blowing raspberries!
Conversing with Daddy
Here's a video I recorded August 26. Samuel and his Daddy are having a good conversation.
August and September Photos
FINALLY! I've uploaded our photos from August and September to my Shutterfly account. I really tried to pull out the ones that weren't so great, but it's so hard to not put them all out there. I hope to post some more video soon. Here are some of my favorite photos:
August 2
August 2 - Uncle Chris visited from NY
August 4
August 7 - Papa and Samuel enjoy "tummy time"
August 18 - This is the first outfit Kris and I bought for Samuel.
September 3 - He fell asleep with his fist in his mouth.
September 24
September 24 - This is his friend, Tadbit.
September 24 - Who knew diaper changes could be so much fun?

Samuel's Alphabet Adventure
This is funny. I got this site via e-mail from Shutterfly. I uploaded a picture of Samuel and it returned this video. It searches for a face in the picture you upload... I didn't do anything but upload the picture and put in his name.

3 Months!
I cannot believe my baby is 3 months old! Well, yes I can, but still! 3 months! Time has surely flown by.
13 weeks old this past Tuesday, my baby is well on his way to the land of sitting-uppers. :) He tries with all his might to sit up while strapped into his car seat. His little head leans so far forward. Alas, he is unable to get out. Last night, he pulled himself all the way forward in his little bathtub... from a reclined position to bent over (almost kissing his toes)!
He giggles almost freely now. It's obvious he wants to laugh, but seems unable to get his vocal chords to cut loose. He loves to be talked to and really seems to listen. He gets quiet and looks intently at our faces as we coo and smile and do our best to invoke a response.
He's a bed-squirmer too. I find him turned sideways in the bed when I go to pick him up. Speaking of the bed, he has not slept all night again. 6 hours is his usual, for which I am thankful. I have not established the bedtime routine yet. I must get over myself... I feel so tired most evenings when I should be bathing him and preparing him for bed. I'm just going to have to get over it and get going.
He really enjoys bath time. He loves the water pouring over him, and does not mind it running over his face. He loves looking at colorful patterns. The other night I read to him from a flyer about feeding solid foods. He didn't care what it was. He just enjoyed hearing my voice and looking at the paper.
Samuel is doing well at Granna's house. She says he plays on his little gym and talks and laughs with them. I miss him during the day, and I hate that I am missing his best wake times. But, we do manage to get several smiles and a few giggles in the evenings. That makes it ok.

Laughing and Smiling
I attempted to capture Samuel smiling and laughing. There's a little here, but he (as usual) stopped when he realized the camera was recording. (This was taken 8/22/2007.)

Mississippi American Star of Teaching!!!!
Not me!!! My husband!
Kris was awarded the 2007 Mississippi American Star of Teaching award today by a representative of the U.S. Department of Education! I am so proud of him. Samuel and I attended the ceremony. I'm glad my parents were there, though, because Samuel decided it would be a good time to start crying... right when the rep started speaking and during Kris' comments! Oh well.
A lot of students were present at the ceremony... all seniors (since Kris has taught most of them) and his current students. They all said "Awwww" when Samuel started crying. :)
The local paper interviewed Kris yesterday and ran the article this morning. Note the reference to Samuel and me!!! :)
WPHS teacher named 2007 Star of Teaching
By Jason Browne
Each year the U.S. Department of Education chooses one teacher from each state as a Star of Teaching. This year the national organization chose one of West Point’s own.
Kris Hollis, biology teacher at West Point High School, was selected by the USDE amongst nominated teachers of all grades from all over Mississippi. He will accept his award personally from Rogers Johnson, director of intergovernmental affairs for the USDE, today at 10:45 a.m. at a ceremony in the WPHS gymnasium.
Hollis is on a roll lately, having been named as last year’s West Point School District Star Teacher and, more importantly, welcoming his newborn son, Samuel, into the world three months ago.
Although Hollis and his wife of eight years, Laura, live in Starkville, Hollis is pure West Point.
A 1993 graduate of WPHS, Hollis says the teachers who taught him, some of whom are still teaching today, laid the foundation for his success in education. And success is becoming quite a habit for Hollis. In addition to the Star of Teaching Award, he has been named Hebron’s star teacher, during one of his three years at the private school before coming to West Point, and has twice been selected as WPHS’s teacher of the year.
“I’ve won several awards over the years, but to be recognized by a national organization is pretty awesome,” said Hollis. “But I work with great teachers who are equally deserving. It kind of humbles you.”
Despite his humility, Hollis knows he does a good job. But he doesn’t work as hard as he does for awards and accolades. And he definitely doesn’t do it for the money.
“I take my job very seriously. We have to prepare these students for post-secondary studies,” he says. “It’s all about raising achievement for students.”
It’s Hollis’ determination to help as many students as possible which earns him attention from his administrators. Already this year Hollis has begun staying at school after the final bell to tutor students.
Hollis says his high school teachers showed him what it means to care about students, and now “it’s payback time.”
“To be able to give back, to contribute to the community, that’s really what it’s all about,” said Hollis. “And school is like the heart of the community. It’s a privilege to train students who will be future doctors, politicians and leaders.
Although Hollis acknowledges that being recognized as the 2007 Star of Teaching for all of Mississippi by the USDE could be a very attractive item on his resume, he says he intends to stay put until God has other plans for his life.
“I don’t think about stuff in those terms. If I wanted to do something for personal gains, I wouldn’t be in education,” he says.
The real reason Kris Hollis teaches can be witnessed after school during his tutoring class. On Aug. 29, five students from Hollis’ biology two class were at school after hours voluntarily to go over chemical equations prior to the first test of the semester.
The students say Hollis goes out of his way to make the material easy to understand.
“Usually, we get it on the first try,” said Erin Branson. “But he’s patient, too.”
According to the USDE, American Stars of Teaching are selected after being submitted for consideration by local principals, superintendents or colleagues. Researchers then consider personal testimonials and a questionnaire filled out by the principal before choosing a handful of nominees to present to a voting committee.
The voting committee, which is comprised of former teachers, discusses each finalist and votes by secret ballot.
Over 4000 nominations were received for 2007 Star of Teaching consideration.

All-Night Sleeper
Oh yea! My baby slept all night last night. And all night means all night.. not just 5 or 6 hours like he's been doing. From 10 to 6! And, I had to wake him this morning at 6! While I realize this may not yet be the start of continually sleeping through the night, it is good to know that he can do it. And, praise the Lord, his diaper didn't leak. An even bigger "praise the Lord" if it is the start of all-night-sleeping. We'll find out tonight!
Samuel is now 11 weeks old and starting to really have a lot of fun during his wake time. He smiles contagiously and has even begun giggling a little. Papa has a way of tickling him that can get him going. And Mommy's face in the belly or on his thigh usually works too. Of course, Daddy's big smile and conversation always makes Samuel smile.
He has begun pulling himself up to a more erect sitting position if he is reclined (in the bathtub or his car seat). His neck is strong enough to hold his head up very well for several minutes. He loves his mobile and will talk the animals as they go by. We think the zebra is his favorite. He doesn't grasp toys well yet, but he does like to grab his blanket or burp cloth.
I'm pleased to report that he does not protest against the breast after a day of bottle sucking. I was a little concerned about that, but I am so glad that he switches between the two without an apparent problem.
I've begun bathing him every night. Even though he doesn't really need it, he does enjoy baths and I'm trying to establish a bedtime routine. I especially like massaging him with lotion after the bath. It's my favorite time to talk and sing to him and to really love on him like Mommy's love to do.

July Pictures uploaded
I finally uploaded my pictures from July. Check out the Photo Gallery (link at right) to see the album. There are some really cute ones! And let me explain the blurry ones of Samuel when he's wearing the red suit. I was trying to capture him smiling, and just got all his motions. I think they're kind of cute when you watch them as a slide show... you can almost see him moving around.

Catching Up
Sorry to any faithful readers.. it's been a month since my last post. I've been kind of busy, but I should've made this a priority. At least I'll be glad to catch up for posterity.
Samuel is now 10 weeks old and thriving. His cooing takes on much more facial expression which is hilarious. I just wish we could catch his cute faces with the camera. He "talks" much more loudly now too. Sometimes we have to take a second look at him to see if he's just exercising or screaming because something's wrong. He holds his head up pretty well. We have to catch him at just the right time to put him on his tummy because he gets frustrated with not being able to see much. He's starting to grab his blanket or burp cloth but doesn't do so well with toys yet. He loves to be talked to and sung to. He also likes us to make funny noises and faces. It seems to me that he notices our mouths more than anything. He will even start sticking out his tongue if he sees us do it! He likes to hold his right arm up when he lies on his back and look at his fist. He tries to suck on his fists and sometimes finds his thumb. He sleeps 5-6 hours usually at night. When he wakes up, I change him and feed him and put him right back down to sleep. He is really a good baby. I don't think I could ask for a better one!
Uncle Chris came down from New York Thursday, August 2. He stayed until the next Monday. He oohed and aahed over Samuel as if he was his own baby. It did my heart good to see him so enthusiastic about his nephew. And Samuel took to him too. They made silly faces at each other. Chris was even christened with spit up, and I feel the experience was good for him.
Monday, August 6, I took Samuel for his 2-month appointment. That meant vaccinations. His checkup was very good. He weighed 12 lbs 3 oz and was 23 1/2 inches long. Dr. Shirley talks well of Samuel and that always makes a mommy feel good. I asked her about a little lump at the base of his skull on the left side. She said this was a lymph node and nothing to be alarmed about. Samuel's eye was a little watery that morning, and the doctor said it looked to her like a plugged tear duct. We are still massaging his eye every day and wiping it with a warm cloth. It gets a little crusty sometimes (as he sleeps), but it doesn't seem to bother him. Then there were the shots. The nurse came to administer them so the doctor was not associated with pain. (I think that's a great idea.) Samuel handled it as well as could be expected I suppose. He calmed down relatively quickly after I picked him up. He slept the majority of the day. He had a bit of fever that night but Tylenol helped.
And now... the biggie. I am back at work. I started back Wednesday, August 15. I really prayed that the Lord would help me and make the transition easy. And He has! I do miss my baby, but being at work is not as bad as I thought it would be. For now, I am able to stay busy and that is the biggest help. I have routine breaks to express milk for the next day. That also gives me a chance to rest a little.
Where is Samuel you ask? With his Granna (my mother) in West Point. Papa is there too while he looks for another job. So, both grandparents are loving their grandson all day long! I love that Samuel is with them rather than a day care. It made my going back to work much easier. Kris gets up in the mornings and gets ready for work. I get up, feed Samuel, and get his bags packed. Then my men go to West Point and I get ready for work. We're still working out the schedule, but it's going pretty well so far. I am looking forward to the weekend, though, so that I can be home all day with my baby!

6 Weeks Old
Once again, I cannot believe how old MY baby is. It seems like yesterday I was carrying him in my belly. Now, he's "up and at it", growing big and strong, spends much more time awake, and has been "talking" to us for about two weeks now. He gives huge smiles and coos quite loudly. He sleeps in 3 to 5 hour stretches at night. It is a lot of fun to watch him grow.
Baby acne appeared last week. We are sad that his beautiful complexion is temporarily interrupted, but it is temporary. Right now I'm holding him as I type and he sleeps. He is fun to watch when he sleeps. He dreams sweet dreams and smiles so big. I wish I could jump into his head and see what he sees. Sometimes, he gets so tickled and laughs in his sleep.. something we've not heard him do while he's awake.
We've had frequent visits from Granna and Papa (my parents) as well as Papaw (Kris' dad). They love to come and talk to him. He listens to all of us intently, sometimes giving us a very serious look, and sometimes talking back.
Samuel is very strong for his age. He is doing very well holding his head up, and often wants to stand on his feet. His legs are strong enough to support his weight, but he of course lacks the balance needed to stand on his own.
He has asked for his first gift.. :) He asked Uncle Chris (who works for Apple) for an iPhone. Maybe Uncle Chris will bring one when he comes to visit from New York. (just kidding!) The best gift will be Uncle Chris himself!

4 Weeks (7/3/2007)
Today Samuel is 4 weeks old. It is so hard to believe! He has changed so much since his birth day. I posted some pictures to my online gallery - one album just for June 5 and another album for the remainder of June. Click the Photo Gallery link on the right to see them.
Samuel is doing very well. We are already pretty much on a schedule which is nice. He eats every 3 hours or so and naps for about 1 1/2 hours between feedings. At night he sleeps anywhere from 3 to 5 hours at a time. He sleeps in his crib which is a blessing. Our biggest challenge right now I think is getting him comfortable being by himself. He likes his swing as long as you're right there by him. He likes being on a pallet on the floor if you're right there by him. But, we are working on it. The other challenge is not rushing to pacify him every time he cries. That is sure hard. I realize too that he's only 4 weeks old, so I don't want to rush the independence thing too much.
All in all, we sure are proud of our baby. He is a joy and well worth the wait. I hope you'll go view the online photo albums. I think we've got some really cute pictures. To whet your appetite, here's a photo from June 30:

3 Weeks and 3 Days (6/29/07)
I've been working hard on keeping Samuel happy, but this blog has been ever on my mind. I wanted to record some things so I would not forget, but it's been hard to find time to do anything but take care of my baby. That is the way it should be I suppose.
Here's a brief catch-up: June 5 we went to the hospital to be induced. Pitocin was started around 6:30. My water was broken by the doctor around 1:30. Labor started to pick up around 2:30. I got stadol via IV around 4:15 (I was 3 centimeters). I got an epidural at 5:00. We then discovered I was at 9 centimeters. I started pushing at 5:30. The epidural was cut off because I could not feel enough to push effectively. Samuel was born after an episiotomy, with the aid of a vacuum, and without pain medication for Mommy (other than a local anesthetic for the episiotomy) at 7:34. I was extremely exhausted and don't remember much of the process other than labor is painful and I definitely recommend getting an epidural as soon as possible!
The doctor needed about 45 minutes to clean and stitch me up. I had internal and external tears as well as the episiotomy. The nursery worker was kind enough to wait an extra long time so we could spend time with Samuel before he had to go to the nursery. My blood pressure dropped and I was told I would not be able to nurse him before he left. I begged them to let me anyway, so they opted to let our family and friends come in the room first to give my pressure time to come back up. We had a wonderful time together looking at him and blessing him - even sang "Happy Birthday" to him. Then everyone left to go back outside the nursery and wait. I was able to nurse him and we both did extremely well. Kris went with Samuel to the nursery and I was moved to my post-partum room (around 9:15).
Samuel then made his first poopy diaper before they could even weigh and measure him. We then discovered that he weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. and was 18 1/2 inches long. Everyone got wonderful pictures and video of him getting his first bath. He was a good baby even then - managed to find his fingers right away.
Meanwhile, I received a turkey sandwich for all my hard work. Then my blood pressure spiked, I got sick and had a brief seizure. Nurses went into action and found a doctor who advised them to give me a shot of magnesium. Just in case you ever have to have that, let me forewarn you, it burns a lot when given all at once. Then, I was moved to ICU to be more closely monitored and I was put on a magnesium drip. My blood pressure returned to normal immediately, and there it has stayed. They did find protein in my urine that night, but it was gone by morning. Sadly, there was a man in ICU with pneumonia, so Samuel could not come visit me. My stay in ICU was uneventful - mostly sleeping with occasional interruptions from a nurse checking my reflexes (to be sure I was not getting too much magnesium).
Around 11:30, the nursery called and said Kris could come in and feed Samuel a bottle. The next day, they allowed Samuel to go to the room with Kris and my parents where he received two more bottles. I was gladly sent back to my room around 6:30 that evening. What a glad reunion with my husband and my baby! AND.. a cheeseburger and fries. My first meal in over 36 hours. And of course, my second chance to nurse Samuel. He again did well, but had quite an appetite since he'd already been introduced to formula. The remainder of our hospital stay was without incident. I got an extra day since I had the seizure and ICU stay, so we went home Friday, June 8.
The time between the 8th and the 19th was somewhat uneventful... just getting used to having a baby at home and the adjusted sleep schedule. However, I can say I was somewhat prepared for the nighttime feedings since I was up so often at the end of the pregnancy. Kris, on the other hand, has really had to adjust. He is such a big help though and so willing to get up and change a diaper and bring me the baby! My milk came in the night of the 8th, and nursing has only gotten better.
On the 19th, we took Samuel for his 2-week checkup and for his circumcision. All that went extremely well. He is so healthy - weighed 8 lbs 4 oz and was up to 20 1/4 inches long. That seemed like quite a jump on the length, but the nurse said that sometimes at the hospital they don't/can't really stretch them out well enough to get an accurate length. His circumcision went well although Kris and I opted to not be in the room. The doctor said he actually slept through it and had no bleeding. They put a foam band around the site to act as a scab.. we were told to just let it fall off. However, Samuel decided his hand needed to be down there at his first diaper change, and he pushed it up! We tried to do all we could to leave it alone, but by that night it had come off. I was told as long as there was no bleeding, he was all right. We just continued to put Neosporin on it and he did very well. It's looking really well and I am thankful.
Now, we've got another week under our belts and are starting to feel comfortable. And big news! His cord stump fell off last night. That was such a good thing for me, because that ugly thing was stinky and seemed to always be in the way. And believe it or not, my son just pushed himself over from his tummy to his side. Have I ever mentioned that his middle name, Bryant, means STRONG? It is a fitting name!
I'm hopeful to get some pictures uploaded to shutterfly soon. I will do another post when pictures are available.

In Labor
9:20 a.m.
We arrived at the hospital at 6:00 this morning. As soon as we arrived in labor and delivery, the nurse said, "Room 2". Apparently, we look like expecting parents. :) Pitocin was started around 6:30 and has been increased every 20-30 minutes. I was still 2 centimeters when I arrived. I can feel the contractions but there is not any pain. The doctor said she would probably come around lunch to break my water. So, we wait...
2:20 p.m.
The doctor came around 1:30 and broke my water. Before then, my contractions managed to become regular (every 2 minutes or so), but I still had no pain with them. Now, about an hour since my water broke, I am feeling some pain with the contractions. They are still tolerable though. I was dilated to 3 centimeters when the doctor checked me. I am told things will accelerate now. We still wait...

41 Weeks - Still Counting
We are still waiting on Samuel to arrive. My checkup Friday was good. My weight and blood pressure are still great - my total weight gain now is 23 pounds. The non-stress test was non-stressful (at least for me). The baby's heart rate was terrific, but I had no contractions during the monitoring. The nurse 'buzzed' my belly a couple of times and the baby's heart rate jumped up and then came back down as expected. The best news is, I had dilated 2 centimeters. I will not be surprised if it's more than that now.
Since I am overdue, the doctor scheduled me for an induction Tuesday morning. If I make it to Tuesday, I will be 10 days past my date. While I definitely want to start labor on my own, I am thankful to know that at least by Tuesday, our baby will be here!
I've had a few somewhat painful contractions since Friday, but still nothing regular. I do notice contractions more frequently now, but I do not consider myself in labor yet since the contractions are not very strong or consistent. (Maybe my typing this will get me going!)
I suppose my next post will be announcing the arrival of our little one. I can hardly wait!

40 Weeks!
I had my 40-week checkup this morning. Unfortunately, there's not much to report. I've still not dilated any... meaning I'm still "on hold". I'm scheduled for another checkup next Friday. They will do a nonstress test at that time - which is just monitoring the baby and contractions.
We are now going to play the waiting game!

39 Weeks
I had my 39-week checkup Friday. Everything still looks good, but I have not dilated any yet. My doctor seemed a little surprised but still says it's not unusual for the first baby. My blood pressure is "perfect" and I managed to put on a few more pounds. My total weight gain thus far is 27 pounds. The doctor estimates the baby is 7 to 7 1/2 pounds now. I really think that's a great size to deliver, but God knows best! We have prayed that the baby will come after Kris gets finished with all his work for the school year - next Friday. So, I am really ok with not being dilated any.
We shopped yesterday (hopefully for the final time) for the last bit of furniture. I now have a changing table/dresser combo with a hutch. This piece matches the crib. I hope to have a picture of the nursery up soon. I have the finishing touches to put on the room... organizing drawers and shelf space and then I'll post a picture.
I ordered a glider rocker yesterday - should be here this week. I figured since we were spending money, why not go ahead and do it right!
This morning, we are enjoying the sunshine. I'm sitting outside typing this and watching Kris wash the cars in the garage. It's a beautiful day, and I am thankful for the sun... I think my legs will be too. I'm in desperate need of a tan!

38 Weeks!
It is so hard to believe that I am 38 weeks pregnant! I had my checkup today and all looks good. My weight and blood pressure are good - I actually weighed 2 pounds less than last week! My belly measurement is still good. The baby's heart rate is 148-152... strong and steady. I have not dilated any, but I am about 50% effaced. Samuel's head is still down! :)
I still feel really good. I am having some contractions, but nothing painful... mostly pressure and tightness that sometimes takes my breath. There is added pressure that makes walking less enjoyable. My feet and ankles are swollen almost all the time now (even in the mornings), but since my blood pressure is normal the swelling is not a concern. Those are really the only uncomfortable things I am experiencing... well, that and something of a much more personal nature I'll not bore anyone else with!
I'm getting into baby mode at home... pulling out things to wash and set up. I have a little final shopping to do this weekend; but then I hope to have all I want or need before Samuel comes.
Check out the Photo Gallery link at the right. I've added pictures from a couple more showers as well as pictures of the purchases and gifts we've received. I had a shower at work yesterday, so those pictures are coming soon!

3 Weeks To Go!
I went to the doctor today for my 37 week checkup. It was a good appointment, except that I'm still gaining weight and have now reached 25 pounds total gained. It's not a disappointment to my doctor - just to me. My belly measurement is on-track, the baby's heart rate is good, and my blood pressure was still good. I have not dilated any yet and the baby is still in the head-down position. All in all, it was a good appointment. I go back next week!
The shower at Kris' work Monday was fun. We received lots of gifts and well-wishes. I hope to get my pictures uploaded soon.
It's hard to believe that our baby will be here soon. I've got to get cracking on setting up at home. I feel like I have so much to do - and so little time. :)

4 Weeks and Counting
I'm really sorry to any faithful blog-watchers for taking so long to post again. I don't know what has happened. My 34-week appointment got pushed back because my doctor had a surgery that morning, so I got bumped to a 35-week appointment. Then, we've been rolling.
BUT - more important things first. My dad is doing extremely well since his bypass surgery. He returned to work (a few hours a day) April 16th. He started cardiac rehab on the 18th I believe and showed off. He could already do more than they expected. I know it is the anointing of the Lord strengthening him. We are thankful that he is doing so well and improving so greatly.
Now, let's see about my appointments. I was supposed to go on the 17th (which is technically around 34 1/2 weeks), but like I said, that got bumped. So, I went on the 20th. My belly measured 35 cm which was right for 35 weeks. My blood pressure was still good (128/76), as was the baby's heart rate (144 bpm). My weight was up more than I'd like (had gained 5 pounds since the last visit), but I contribute a good bit of it to the water retention that started after my 32-week appointment. The swelling is not an issue as long as my blood pressure is good. Then I was told that I would start coming every week.
So, last Friday (4/27), I had my 36-week checkup. Everything still looks great. My weight was up again - now I've gained a total of 22 pounds. My blood pressure was great (120/70), and my belly measured 36 cm. I don't have the heart rate, but it was strong and steady. I had the Group B Strep test done - will have the results at my next appointment. I've not dilated any yet, which is fine since I have a few weeks to go. The best news is that the doctor says the baby is in the head-down position. My next appointment is May 4th.
I've posted a couple of belly pictures. Kris took one last night for 36 weeks. You may notice that my hair looks different. I'd had enough long hair to last me for a while, so I went back to a shorter "do". It's much easier, and I do NOT regret cutting it at all!
I've had several people ask if I'm still working. I have felt so great (and still do) that I do not mind working. Not to mention, it helps me keep my mind off the things that could make any pregnant woman anxious. Work is helping me pass the time and keep myself busy. I have realized though that time is getting short, so I'm about to get cracking on making final preparations!
Since my last post, I had a shower at our church down in Ellisville. This shower was unique and so meaningful because it was more than just gifts. Several people there blessed Samuel with scripture and prayers. I'd much rather have those words than the gifts any day! The best thing revealed to me was how much we are loved by those people there. It is like a family - that is so important.
Kris' co-workers are giving us a shower this afternoon. They have been forced to call it a 'get-together' though, because Kris said he would not attend a shower. :) I'm looking forward to the afternoon with his friends and co-workers.

32-Week Checkup
Yesterday morning I had my 32-week checkup. All looks good. I've still only gained 15 pounds. I am glad that I've not put on more weight than that. With 8 weeks to go, I know I will gain more, but it's still less I have to lose after the baby is born. My doctor documented in my chart that I am not opposed to having an epidural and also that I plan on breastfeeding. I guess it's good that it's in my chart in case there's a question while I'm in the hospital. I'm on the 2-week checkup routine for the next two visits and then I'll be down to every week. It's hard to believe that my due date is so close. I knew the time would go by quickly, but I didn't realize it would be this fast!
We wrapped up our childbirth and breastfeeding classes last week. I am kind of glad because the schedule was getting hectic; but, I am also a little overwhelmed by all the information. Thankfully, we got lots of handouts and materials to go back and read over which will help us I'm sure. Of course, I haven't gotten into any of it yet! But, that is going to be part of my evening routine for the remainder of my pregnancy.
My dad continues to improve. He is getting stronger each day - we are just trying to be sure he doesn't do too much. He came and spent some time at our house last night while my mom did some work for their church. He walked on our treadmill for a few minutes and then we watched part of the Dancing With the Stars results show. I missed the last section or two, but discovered this morning that, of course, Shandi was booted off. I think it's sad since she could actually dance.

My AWESOME Daddy
Last Wednesday (March 21), my Dad went into bypass surgery (began at 8:30). Less than 3.5 hours and 5 bypasses later, the surgery was complete and he was being moved to the Critical Care Unit. Around 1:30, we were able to see him and he was already rousing from the anesthesia. Our visit was very short as he was attempting to let us know he could hear us. About an hour later, we were allowed back in. He was still very groggy, but able to open his eyes a little more and let us know that he was aware of our presence. By this time, the breathing machine had been turned back from 10 to 8.
We saw him again around 6:00. The breathing tube had been removed and he was able to talk a little. He reminded us of what he said when he left the pre-op room - "I'm just going to take a nap." He also said he figured he'd lost his tan, but we assured him that his color looked great. I can only say that it was an awesome thing to see my Dad that alert after such a major event. He would not let me leave that visit without reaching over the bed to kiss his forehead. You can imagine that was difficult for me with my belly, so he even extended his head toward me so that I could reach him. He said he loved me and Samuel - talk about doing a heart good! There was another visit that night at 9:00, but Samuel and I had to go back home for some rest.
The next morning (3/22), I was there bright and early (well, it wasn't really bright at 5:30) so I could see him at 6:00. He was awake and waiting on us. He relayed the events of the night... the nurses came and sat him up on the side of the bed and touched his feet to the floor. He also stood 'by himself' for about 10 seconds. We had a nice visit and then left for breakfast and showers.
When we returned at 10:00, we were informed that he had been moved to a room. We found him all settled in his bed and ready for a nap. He was able to sit up in a chair for all his meals. Sometime that afternoon, he walked the full length of his hall (we later found out it was around 1000 feet) with the assistance of a nurse. All this with IVs sticking out of his neck and chest tubes hanging from his body.
Friday morning (3/23), the doctors removed the chest tubes and he was able to walk more freely up and down the hall. This would be his last trip with a nurse or rehab rep... they released him to walk with somebody in the family. Around lunch time, they came and removed the IVs from his neck making his load even lighter. He continued his regimen of eating, sleeping, walking, sleeping, sucking on a machine to expand his chest, sleeping...
Saturday (3/24), they removed all his bandages to let his incisions "get some air". We also received the first sign of 'hope' that he could go home the next day. He continued his regimen of eating, sleeping, walking, sleeping, sucking on a machine to expand his chest, sleeping...
Sunday (3/25), around 10:00, the doctors came in and released him to go home. They wrapped up the paperwork and and let him out around 11:00. A brief time later, he walked through the front door of his home. We all had big smiles of joy!
Since then, he's continued his regimen of eating, sleeping, walking, sleeping, sucking on a machine to expand his chest, sleeping... We are all very proud of him. He has worked hard to get this far, and I know he will only get better as time goes on.

30-Week Checkup
This morning I had my 30-week checkup. I had to drink a coke so they could test my blood sugar levels again. They apparently did other bloodwork because the lab tech took a vial of blood from my arm rather than just pricking my finger. Whatever they did, all the work came back with good numbers. I have no gestational diabetes, no other conditions, and my growth is right on track. I've gained 15 pounds so far which I think is great. My belly size is good and the baby is very active - all good signs of a healthy pregnancy.
Last night we had our 3rd childbirth class. We watched a video on c-sections, reviewed the breathing technique and talked about general guidelines for introducing solid foods. Good stuff to know. Next week we will tour the maternity floor at the hospital and see where we'll be. That should be fun.

Photo Updates
I've added a link at the right to my online photo gallery. Also, I uploaded my 30-week belly shot. Enjoy!
30-Week Updates
It's been two weeks since my last post, but I feel like it's been much longer than that. There's been a lot going on, and I should've been more diligent to post.
I guess I will start with childbirth classes. The first class was just like a lecture. We received a LOT of information, too much to absorb in one 2 1/2 hour session. But, it was all good and beneficial. The second class was more interactive as we practiced breathing techniques and ways to ease back pain. Thankfully, I've not had back pain, but it is good to know about the double-hip squeeze. :) We watched a vaginal delivery video also. Tonight will be our 3rd class. We are supposed to watch a C-section video.
I also started breastfeeding classes. I guess you guys can skip this paragraph... The first class was much like the first childbirth class - lots of info and not much interaction. During the second class, we practiced positions and learned how to swaddle. It's encouraging to know that breastfeeding is NOT supposed to make my nipples sore. I have prayed that Samuel and I get the hang of it quickly so that I am not unsure about it when we get home.
I had my second baby shower yesterday. It was really nice and I was pleased with all the gifts and seeing my friends and family. My dear friend, Robin, from Pearl, MS came up for this shower and it was so nice to see her!
Also, my aunt and cousin from Winona drove over. I was so happy to see them since it's been TOO long since I had. The hostesses of this shower bought us the Graco travel system. I am very happy to have that - mostly because it means that now I can get the baby home from the hospital! :)
I am planning on creating a page that lists everything I've received and purchased and possibly links to pictures of them. Hopefully it will be up soon. I'm also looking into using an online picture album. If it goes like I think it will, I will post a link soon, so you can see the shower pictures and whatever else I decide to upload.
We also took another picture of my belly last night, and I hope to get it up today. This will be my 30-week picture. I feel like I look as big as some women who are ready to deliver, but I am not complaining. I know everyone is different. I was glad to hear someone say yesterday that she could not tell I had gained weight anywhere except my belly. That always makes a pregnant girl feel good!
My next doctor's appointment is tomorrow morning. I have to drink another Coke to have the diabetes test done again. Fun! Fun!

Name Picked Out!
We have settled on a name for our little bambino. He will be Samuel Bryant. We will call him Samuel, not Sam or Sammy or any other abbreviated version of the name.
The Lord spoke Samuel into my heart months ago - before we even knew our baby was a boy from the sonogram in January. Samuel means "asked of God" or "heard of God". I believe this is a significant name - the exact one Father God wants him to have. He will be a child who knows God and hears His voice. Not because I say so, but because the Lord God has declared it by giving him that name. Bryant is a name I ran across in a baby name book that we both liked. It means "strong".
Of course, there is always a possibility (however slight it may be) that the baby is really a girl. If so, her name will be Emma Claire.
I had my first baby shower yesterday. We received many gifts - all of which we needed. It was such a joy to see so many friends. We are really appreciative to everyone for all the gifts and kind words given. We recognize the Lord is blessing us!
This weekend I passed the 28 week mark. I think there are somewhere around 80 days left in this pregnancy. I still feel really well. God has been so good to me! Other than being tuckered out more easily, I have been having an easy time. We start childbirth classes tonight. That should be interesting. Hopefully, there will be something interesting to report on that tomorrow.

26 Week Checkup
I just realized I never posted anything from my checkup this week. I went to the doctor Tuesday for my monthly checkup and everything is going well. I was a little shocked that my weight had increased so dramatically since my last visit. If I remember correctly, I'd gained about 5 pounds in a month. I'm not concerned though. My doctor never says anything about it, so I must be doing ok. The baby's heartbeat is still 148-150. My next appointment is in another month and then I'll go every two weeks; then every week until I deliver!
I really need to get my pictures and video in order. I still need to get the pictures from our 22 week ultrasound up. And, I'd really like to see if I can get part of the video I took of the ultrasound posted. Time... Time... Time...
In other news, yesterday my brother-in-law that works at B&W in West Point got hit in the head by some part of a crane. The crane operator somehow misjudged where he was and swung it right into the back of Rex's head. It appears that it only knocked him out. The scans of his head and neck showed normalcy. We praise God that it was not too serious. He is off work for a couple of days, but he is REALLY BLESSED!

26 Weeks
I can't believe it's been a month since I posted last. I guess I just haven't had much going on to report. I still don't have anything really, but I did put up some new belly shots for 25 and 26 weeks. They look the same to me - belly size that is. Here's the latest (taken yesterday):

I go back to the doctor tomorrow for my regular checkup. We will go to childbirth classes in March. I'm starting to get my showers lined up which is fun. I've done all I think I can do on registries. I need everything, but felt silly putting everything on there. I figure most folks buying for a new mom know what a new mom needs. Anyway, in case you're interested, here's my WalMart registry and here's my Babies"R"Us registry.

It's a BOY!
Yesterday was our BIG day. We got to see our baby via ultrasound and discovered that we are having a boy! Knowing the gender really adds another level of reality to this pregnancy. We are so excited and will be thrilled to meet him.
I don't know what it is, but it seems like 'everybody' really wants us to have a boy. We know that we are being given a gift from the Lord. He has given us a boy - it is what He wants us to have - probably what the world needs if I know anything about my heavenly Father! We are thankful to Him for giving us this blessing.
We do not have a name picked out yet, but we are working on it. Perhaps it will not be too long and I'll be able to share with you all what we've decided.
Of course, we went shopping yesterday and purchased some things we've been eyeing. You can't find out what you're having and not buy anything! We settled on the bedding for the crib and a pack and play that matches the same design. We also picked up an outfit for the little one. I will take a picture of it and post it here soon.
Next - registries!

Belly Shot
Well, I finally did it... I have started documenting my belly growth. Kris took this picture last night. This is 22 weeks (and 1 day) - 5 months!
Tomorrow, we will go for the BIG ultrasound to see what gender the baby is!

20 Weeks
I'm 20 1/2 weeks pregnant. It's hard to believe I'm at the halfway point! I am excited and, I will admit, a little unsure about what the next weeks have in store for us. I am not scared or nervous, just curious.
I've been feeling the baby move every day. Sometimes it's even been strong enough to see. Kris has also seen my belly move which is encouraging. I like stretching out and feeling that baby do his/her gymnastics routine in there. I definitely feel an increase in movement after eating. As I type, Baby Hollis is working out.
I really have no news to share. We've not done anymore shopping for the baby. I've just decided to wait until we know (hopefully) what the gender is. There's so much to choose from, and I figure I might as well make it fun by imagining what my boy or girl (as opposed to 'my baby') would look like in something. I did receive an e-mail the other day regarding car seat safety, so I have a guideline on that now.
On the sleeping front... I've not been sleeping too well lately. I'm not really uncomfortable.. I'm not sure what it is. I have been trying to get used to a new pillow Kris bought me for Christmas. It's called a Snoogle and it curves around you in a variety of ways. I'm trying to get used to sleeping on my left side (as suggested), but I'm typically a tosser I think. I like rolling over, but this pillow does not allow that to be done very easily. Perhaps I will have to pack it away until I get a little bigger for the sake of sleep.
However, yesterday I think I caught up. I was so tired - please don't think me lazy - I practically went to bed when I got home from work. I soaked in the tub for a few minutes and then laid down, watched the news, ate a little supper, and laid back down. I turned the TV off around 7:00 and actually fell asleep. I mostly slept from then until shortly after 6:00 this morning. Kris, bless his heart, had very little interaction with me!
Tonight will be different. We are going to a gathering one of his co-workers coordinated. It will be a nice change of pace.
